Freedom Day in SA

April 27th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

Free at last, we are free at last!!!
Our democracy is 13 years old today!!!
27th April is the anniversary of the first democratic elections in South Africa- has been a public holiday since '95.
I'm often amazed at how far we've come- sure we still have problems- Aids, poverty, crime- but when I think of where we could have been..this is still a pretty cool place to live- it's definitely interesting
Here is a picture of some of the queues back then...took all day but was more than worth it

I have family visiting- so just a quite frugal day

Amazing line (or queue, as you say)!

The last time I went to vote, the elections were for school board members and a referendum about securing city parks. At my polling place there was no line whatsoever. Two other people were marking their ballots, but there were stations for about 18 people to vote at once. Later, we found out that only 6 in 100 registered voters participated!

We had about a 20% turnout in our town election this week. Not something to take for granted.
